12:10 PM – 1:25 PM Private Luncheon for Media Only: "Venture Capital & Security: Are We at the Daw of a Renaissance in Security Technology?"
Abstract:
Cybersecurity is the topic du jour. From the New York Times data breach to destructive attacks on Saudi Aramco networks to a recently issued White House Executive Order on cybersecurity, the issue rapidly moved from one that just a few were concerned with to one in which almost every American is now aware of the risks in cyberspace. If verbiage is any indicator of national importance, the President devoted over five times as many words to cybersecurity in his State of the Union this year than he did in 2012.
The emergence of cybersecurity as a critical consideration in our national defense and economic prosperity is coupled with rapid changes in technology. In the past five years, we have moved into a mobile environment, and advances in cloud computing technology are now making our experiences in this environment richer—further, cloud computing and advances in analytics is beginning to unlock the enormous power of data sets. All of these trends point to security as a growth area for investors; however, it has historically been viewed skeptically by many investors due to the perceived size of the addressable market. Is this perspective changing? And if so, what does it mean for the community of venture firms, enterprise and government customers, and start-ups? And, does the success of the Splunk and Palo Alto Networks IPOs suggest that we are at the dawn of a renaissance in security technologies? This panel with an esteemed list of venture capitalists will dive into these questions and more.
