Bob Butler serves as a Senior Advisor to The Chertoff Group. Mr. Butler has a distinguished career in information technology, intelligence, and national security that spans 34 years in both public and private sectors.
Mr. Butler is the co-founder and managing director of Cyber Strategies LLC. Previously, he served as the Chief Security Officer for IO, a global data center service and product firm. He has consulted as a Special Government Expert to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and other organizations on cyber security and enterprise risk management. He also serves as a fellow at the Center for New American Security (CNAS) and is a member of the Texas State Cyber Security, Education and Economic Development Council. Prior to assuming his current roles, Mr. Butler served as the first Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy (August 2009-August 2011.) In this role, Mr. Butler acted as the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense and other Defense leaders on the development of cyber strategy and policy.
Mr. Butler is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and a former member of the Defense Departments Senior Executive Service. He has also been an account executive and senior cyber strategist with Computer Sciences Corporation.
Mr. Butler earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Manhattan College and a Master of Business Administration from the School of Business at the University of Maryland. He is a former RAND fellow and has served as a National Defense Fellow at Georgetown Universitys’ School of Foreign Service. He has received a number of public service awards including the Armed Forces Communications Electronics Associations North America Information Technology Leadership award. Mr. Butler resides in San Antonio with his wife, Annie. They are the proud parents of six children and two grandchildren.
